按照《美國軍事歷史》的說法[1],「山姆大叔」一名源於1812年美英戰爭時期紐約州倫塞列郡特洛伊城的肉類商人塞繆爾·威爾遜(Samuel Wilson,1766年-1854年),暱稱山姆大叔(Uncle Sam),在戰爭中向美軍供應醃製的牛肉,牛肉桶上的牌子寫著『EA-US』。EA (Elbert Anderson,a contractor who supplied beef to the United States Army during the War of 1812. )為公司名,而山姆大叔(Uncle Sam)的縮寫是US,當桶被送到部隊時,一些來自特洛伊城的士兵,開玩笑地說桶上寫的US字樣,一定就是指「山姆大叔」,這說法很快傳開。由於合眾國(United States)的縮寫恰好也是US,其後成為了美利堅合眾國的綽號。美國人將「山姆大叔」視為誠實可靠、吃苦耐勞及愛國主義精神,並認為這是自己公民的驕傲和共有的品性。
