youtube-dl是一款開源、命令行界面的下載器，最初旨在從 YouTube 上下載視頻，現在也支持其它網站。[2]該項目也是GitHub星標數（stars）最高的項目之一，截至2020年10月，共獲得72,000多個星標。[3]
2020年10月23日，GitHub應美國唱片業協會的DMCA請求，將該項目與其分支從該網站上移除。[4]同年11月16日，該項目存儲庫被GitHub官方恢復。[5]

youtube-dl項目由Ricardo Garcia創建於2008年。源代碼由Python編寫，託管在GitHub上。[6]最初僅支持YouTube，但隨着項目的發展，開始支持其他視頻網站。[7]2011年Ricardo Garcia不再維護此項目，由phihag接手，後轉移給dstftw。[8]

2020年8月28日，GitHub用戶blackjack4494在項目issue區發表《youtube-dl正在走向死亡嗎？》[9]的帖子，表達對youtube-dl的主維護者dstftw和remitamine長期不活躍且有大量PR未合併的不滿，並創建分支youtube-dlc。[10]後 youtube-dlc 合併至更爲活躍的yt-dlp （頁面存檔備份，存於網際網路檔案館）專案並新增更多網站的支持。
RIAA 移除請求[編輯]
2020年10月23日，美國唱片業協會（RIAA）根據《數字千年版權法案》（DMCA）向GitHub發布了刪除通知，其中要求刪除youtube-dl及其分支。RIAA指控youtube-dl項目違反了DMCA的第1201條反規避條款以及德國版權法的規定，因為它規避了YouTube用於生成視頻文件本身URL的rolling cipher[如何翻譯]（ RIAA認為這是有效的技術保護措施，因為它是「旨在禁止直接訪問YouTube視頻文件，從而防止或禁止視頻文件的下載，複製或分發」），[11][12][13]其文檔也公開列出由RIAA成員旗下的受版權保護的藝術家的音樂視頻作為示例。GitHub接受了請求，移除了該項目。[4][14][15]
此舉遭到了批評，部分報道指出該程序仍有合法用途，例如下載者的合理使用所需的視頻內容（例如用於網絡存檔和新聞報道），或明確允許在以下情況下重複使用的內容：例如開放內容許可。[16][3]
RIAA的行為也引發了史翠珊效應，大量用戶開始在互聯網上重新分發該程序及其源代碼，類似於AACS加密密鑰爭議。[17]
2020年11月16日，電子前哨基金會正式向GitHub發送了一份質疑移除請求的信，澄清了該軟件並沒有「規避」所謂的「滾動密碼」或其他任何版權保護措施。youtube-dl和瀏覽器或其他任何JavaScript執行器一樣，直接「使用」了在Youtube網頁上公開的滾動密碼。使用公開的密碼並不侵權。[18]隨後GitHub恢復了該存儲庫。GitHub還在官方博客中宣布，未來將由技術和法律專家組成的團隊逐項審查所有涉及《數字千年版權法案》第1201節的移除請求。[5][19]
